When a ticker looks unfamiliar, sound it out against the company name — most map directly (watch for traps like GOOGL for Alphabet, or BRK.B for Berkshire Hathaway).
Common misconception
Confusing a well-known brand with its parent company — a popular app isn't always its own publicly traded ticker.
Matching a ticker to the company behind it
You see the ticker 'GOOGL' and four candidate names: Alphabet, Google Search, YouTube, and Waymo.
- Rule out product and subsidiary names first — Google Search, YouTube, and Waymo are products or units, not the publicly traded company.
- The ticker abbreviates the parent holding company, not the best-known brand.
- Alphabet is the parent that owns Google Search, YouTube, and Waymo, so it's the match.
When a familiar brand and its ticker don't look alike, suspect a parent-company structure — trace up to the holding company.
