How this GDP ranking is built

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total monetary value of all goods and services a country produces in a year. The figures shown are nominal GDP โ€” not adjusted for purchasing power parity โ€” reported in U.S. dollars at the prevailing exchange rate. Data comes from the World Bank, refreshed once a country's national accounts are published.

Because the values are converted to dollars, currency moves can shift the ranking even when local output is unchanged. The figure under each value shows GDP produced per second on average โ€” a useful intuition for the scale of an economy. To compare countries against the world's largest companies by sales, see the revenue ranking.
